Art challenge fail.

Ok, im now roughly 5 days short of where im so post to be with this challenge.  I thought i could juggle finals and a daily sketch painting but as of a few days ago it clicked that I have 3 painting to flesh out in a week.  So Im not entirely goofing off or being lazy I did spend 7 hours yesterday on photoshop figuring out layer masks for one of my finals.  Although frustrating it was also quite satisfying, thanks to some much needed help from friends I learned more in that 7 hour timeframe about photoshop than I have all semester.
But as always thanks for the views and check back in a week or so and ill have some paintings up.

A taste of what my Thanksgiving break consisted of

Both of these under paintings where done in the style developed by the old masters.  If its good enough for them its good enough for me!  So the top one will be glazed over using oils and a dead palette followed by touch ups with a double primary to boost the saturation.  For the bottom painting I will be trying a new method, and will be brought into photoshop to do some touch ups as well as made into a grayscale more touch ups and than glazing colors digitally, will see how it goes.  Not to worry ill have my daily post done and up within an hour or two.

Happy Thanksgiving, Friends Fam and the Rest

Day 9

So did this as an excuse to try out my custom cloud brush I made last night.  Pretty pleased with how it operates, there is defiantly an art to making custom brushes,  spent at-least two hours goofing around and managed to make this one and a gaggle of other really bad looking brushes that I ended up deleting

Day 8

Trying out a new technique I picked up from Feng Zhu's youtube channel.  Basically in consist of a line drawing photo scrap and the color picker.  However I didn't get much actual painting done most of my time was spend figuring out the correct way to use multiply layers, photos, and color overlays in a cohesive fashion.  So I will most likely be carrying on with this painting for tomorrows post.

Day 7 APPLE DOS

Well....  Better than my first apple.  Making progress slowly but surely.

day 6

I apologize for the lateness of these "daily posts" not sure why I thought it would be a good idea to start this challenge during finals.  Although I must admit these things are quite relaxing to do.  Anyways I began this beasty with the full intentions of making it into a painting in an hour.  But instead got caught up in all the details.  The design is based of an Angler fish.  A deep sea nasty fellow covered in barnacles and strapped on armour made from ship wrecks.

Frustrating day 4

I attempted a technique used by Keith Thomson who uses a combination of the burn and dodge tools combined with soft light color overlays.  Super effective if used correctly.  I found that its not as easy as he makes it out to be, and if used improperly looks something like this!  I also jacked up my layers somehow and couldn't throw in a background without painting or texturing over the image so yeah that was also annoying, but enough bitching. Its a cool process and I plan on figuring so ill defiantly be revisiting it throughout the challenge.

Day 1 of 30 day challenge

I started working digitally this semester and  must admit I am struggling with photoshop.  Motivated by Ashley Woods 30 day challenge that he started on his blog, I have begun my own.  So for the next 30 days I will be creating 1 digital image a day in 1 hour.  My goal by the end of this is to have a more intuitive feel for the program as well as 1 half way decent image.  I think it is safe to say that this is not the one!

Also you should check out Woods 30 day challenge much cooler stuff going on their.  http://ashleybambaland.blogspot.com

Tonight's work

Touched up my zombie  painting bout to call it good and move on, chalk it up as learning experience.  The painting on the easel is the block in stage of my love and Tech project due in two weeks, Haven't attempted a full scale oil painting in that short of a time frame I am hoping I wont run into drying time issues.  I also have two gessoed up boards on stand by so look for progress on those sometime next week.

Life painting work in progress

New process I have been toying with.  Started on a toned canvas color is irrelevant just depends on the mood you want to achieve.  Than I start gesturing in the composition with vince charcoal, I than proceed with a sharpie and ruff in the details. Once the drawing is in place I add white highlights with gesso or acrylic paint or guash whatever is on hand.  Next step oil glaze in a basic shadow tone.  And than comes the underpainting blocking in color using an old masters dead pallet.  The last step involves glazes with a double primary palette.  The outcome for this painting.  egh.  Not the best but love the process and will continue working with it until I figure it out.  Thanks for the views.

Sculpture of Arzach and tribute to Moebious

Arzak is originally a character created and illustrated by the well known french comic artist Moebius aka Jean Giraud.  The following images below consist of steps I took to complete this 3d sculpture from start to finish.   Step one I constructed a wire armature which I posted a few weeks back;  Step two construction of anatomy and overall build up of figure, Step three clothing and details. Step four paint.  For the painting itself I used acrylic paints starting with a dark underpainting and from their I used dry brush and glazing techniques.  If you have any further questions feel free to ask.  Thanks for your time and interest.
